NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE TAUNTON MA
550 PM EDT MON MAY 23 2005

..AN UNUSUALLY STRONG LATE MAY COASTAL STORM WILL RESULT IN
DANGEROUS CONDITIONS FOR MARINERS TUESDAY INTO AT LEAST WEDNESDAY...

A STRENGTHENING COASTAL STORM OFFSHORE OF NANTUCKET WILL COMBINE WITH
A HIGH PRESSURE SYSTEM OVER SOUTHEASTERN CANADA...AND RESULT IN
PROLONGED STRONG NORTHEAST WINDS AND BUILDING SEAS AS EARLY AS
TONIGHT AND CONTINUE THROUGH AT LEAST MID WEEK.

IN THE SHORT TERM...NORTHEAST WINDS WERE BLOWING 25 TO 30 KNOTS
ACROSS THE GULF OF MAINE SOUTHWESTWARD TO THE OUTER WATERS FROM
MERRIMACK RIVER TO PROVINCETOWN. THESE WINDS WILL CAUSE
BUILDING SEAS OVERNIGHT TO 7 TO 10 FEET JUST EAST OF BOSTON HARBOR.
NORTHEAST WINDS WILL INCREASE OVER ALL THE SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND OUTER
WATERS TUESDAY TO BETWEEN 25 AND 35 KNOTS AND CONTINUE AT THESE
SPEEDS THROUGH AT LEAST WEDNESDAY MORNING. GUSTS TO AROUND 50 KNOTS
ARE ALSO POSSIBLE WEDNESDAY MORNING. THE HIGHEST WINDS ARE EXPECTED
AROUND DAWN WEDNESDAY MORNING. THESE STRONG WINDS WILL RESULT IN
RAPIDLY BUILDING SEAS JUST OFFSHORE TO BETWEEN 15 AND 20 FEET BY
WEDNESDAY MORNING.

WINDS WILL GRADUALLY DECREASE WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON AND SEAS WILL
BEGIN TO SUBSIDE SLOWLY AS WELL. THE STORM IS EXPECTED TO WEAKEN
WHILE IT MIGRATES NORTH TOWARD THE CANADIAN MARITIMES THURSDAY.

MARINERS SHOULD PREPARE FOR DANGEROUS CONDITIONS AT SEA TUESDAY INTO
AT LEAST WEDNESDAY ACROSS THE SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND COASTAL WATERS.
PLAN ACCORDINGLY AND POSTPONE ANY TRIPS UNTIL LATER IN THE WEEK IF
POSSIBLE.

STAY TUNED TO NOAA ALL HAZARDS WEATHER RADIO FOR THE LATEST MARINE
FORECASTS ON THIS LATE SEASON COASTAL STORM.
